Bayer Leverkusen Appoints Alonso as New Head Coach
Xabi Alonso Signs Contract Until June 2024
German Club Parts Ways with Gerardo Seoane
Bayer Leverkusen has announced the appointment of Xabi Alonso as their new head coach. The former Real Madrid and Liverpool midfielder has signed a contract until June 2024.
Alonso replaces Gerardo Seoane, who was sacked following a poor run of form. Leverkusen have won just one of their last seven games in all competitions, including a 4-0 defeat to Porto in the Champions League.
Alonso is a highly respected figure in the football world. He was a key member of the Real Madrid team that won the Champions League three times in a row between 2014 and 2016. He also played for Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and the Spanish national team.
As a coach, Alonso has previously managed Real Madrid's youth team and Real Sociedad's reserve team. He will be hoping to translate his success as a player to his new role at Leverkusen.
Leverkusen will be hoping that Alonso can turn their season around. The club is currently 17th in the Bundesliga table, just one point above the relegation zone. Alonso's first game in charge will be against FC Schalke 04 on Saturday, 8 October.
